PTCB vs ExCPT: which pharmacy technician exam should you take?

Exam details change between cycles. Confirm current figures, fees, and eligibility with each organization before you register.

Pharmacy technicians are regulated state by state. Some state boards accept any nationally accredited certification, some name a specific exam, and some don't require certification at all but let employers set their own rules. Before comparing the exams on anything else, look up your state board of pharmacy's technician requirements. If your state names one exam, that settles it.

Then check with the employers you actually want to work for. Hospital systems and large chains often have a stated preference, and it's easier to ask before you've paid for an exam than after.

Both exams cover the same core job: getting the right drug to the right patient safely and legally. They organize it differently. The PTCE splits the exam into four domains, with Medications the largest at 35% and a dedicated Federal Requirements domain that, since January 2026, includes the Drug Supply Chain Security Act. NHA revised the ExCPT test plan for exams from July 9, 2025, splitting the technician's roles and general duties out from laws and regulations into its own domain.

The PTCE also changed recently: its content outline was revised on January 6, 2026. If you choose the PTCE, make sure your prep material reflects that. Here's exactly what changed.

The PTCE has 90 questions, 10 of which are unscored pretest items mixed in with the real ones. You can't tell which is which, so treat every question as if it counts. The ExCPT is a 100-question exam.

Both are computer-based and multiple choice. One practical difference: the PTCE is taken in person at a Pearson test center, while the ExCPT can also be taken with live remote proctoring from home. Pacing matters on either one; the best way to learn yours is a timed full-length practice run.

Both certifications have to be renewed every two years, with continuing education. The exact hours and topic requirements are set by each organization and can change, so check the current rules when you're due.
